Water information for rural landowners in the Saugeen and Maitland watersheds.
Best Management Practices (BMP) are proven, practical and affordable approaches to conserving water, soil and other natural resources. Over the years BMPs have been developed by farmers, researchers, provincial agency staff and agribusiness professionals.
Numerous BMP have been developed to help reduce water pollution and protect the quantity of water available for use. Examples include planting buffer strips between streams and agricultural land, tree planting, fencing livestock from water courses, protecting wellheads and decommissioning abandoned wells.
We have summarized some key BMP for wellhead protection , protecting groundwater and protecting surface water.
A series of innovative books have been created that outline BMP options that can be tailored to specific landowner needs and concerns. Some of these BMP books can be viewed online at the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food website, and others may be ordered in book form from the ministry.
